Description
The church of St Michele delle Grotte is the most important and largest cave church built in Gravina, the first Cathedral and symbol of the cult of St Michael in Apulia. The church, with its large natural vestibule, dates back to the 11th century. It was built entirely out of an imposing block of tufa stone; its interior has a flat monolithic vault, supported by fourteen pillars that divide it into five naves and end in the same number of apses.
Behind the public fountain go down Grotte San Michele road, next to the Finya Library. You are now descending into Fondovito, one of the two oldest quarters of the city. Go down to the little wall from which you can admire the beauty of the Seven Chambers complex and hear the flow of the Gravina stream. On your left there is a gate that will lead you to St Michele delle Grotte Churc.
It is not currently open to visitors.
